History

The Credit Union Movement in Belize began in 1943, started by a coalition of 32 individuals and led by pioneer Fr. Marion M. Ganey, S.J.

Two credit unions were formed in the Toledo District, and the idea spread nationwide between 1943 and 1950.

In June 1956, the Belize Credit Union League (BCUL) was formally constituted under the Credit Union Act as the legally recognized apex body for credit unions. The league was admitted to the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) in August 1956, through which affiliates received loan protection and life savings coverage.

In 1970, Caribbean leagues began work on a regional body, leading to the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU) in 1972; through CCCU, the League is associated with WOCCU.
